“I’ve always wanted to make a film in which dream blends with reality, and vice-versa. As Georg Christoph Lichtenberg tells us, only the fusion of dream and reality can make up a complete human life. Sadly, our civilization has no time for dreams. There’s no money in them.” Jan Svankmajer
With a quote like that from the director, we’d understand if you needn’t read on and are already grabbing your coat to go and catch the next showing. However, for those still reading – the film is comprised of cut-out ‘eyes-a-bulging’ animations of characters and film footage that follow a married man who lives out a double life in his dreams, in which he has a younger girlfriend. Cheeky! We wouldn’t want to ruin the story for you, but let’s just say that the darkly witty tale being told, combined with the visual genius and the added intrigue that the Czech dialogue brings (English subtitles are provided), this film is rather a curious one. It’s showing until 15th December at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. You may remember last time we went to the ICA we encountered the Turkish President and his Michael Jackson march (http://artwednesday.com/2011/12/06/bloomberg-new-contemporaries/) so who knows what might happen if you pop along for a screening of Surviving Life.
