‘Words and pictures are yin and yang. Married, they produce a progeny more interesting than either parent.’ Dr Suess
Well said Dr Suess, that’ll get the grey matter working. So, on to our next Nice To Meet You, which is as you might have guessed, all about words and pictures.
Some of our favourite artists combine pictures and words – think Sophie Calle, Barbara Kruger, Anthony Burrill, Cy Twombly, Magritte – we could go on, but we’re sure you get the picture (ahem).
Going with the notion that more, is well, more, we have not one, not two, but THREE speakers for you folks! That’s right three for the price of one. First up is internationally acclaimed and award-winning illustrator Marion Deuchars, famed for her Penguin book jackets and more recently her very own brilliant book Let’s Make Some Great Art. Marion will be sharing her skills with you and giving a workshop on how to draw. Next up are wordsmiths Rob and Molly from creative word agency We All Needs Words, who work with brands and personalities to give them that all important ‘voice’, will be imparting you with some words of wisdom (quite literally). So, prepare to draw, write, learn and be inspired. Pencils at the ready!
Luv Luv Luv Records will be there providing the musical talent for listening pleasure and Matthew Phelps from Funthyme will be on hand to keep you all well fed. Don’t forget that all three (or is it five?) are included in the price! That’s inspirational talks, gig and dinner for just £30. Scroll down to buy tickets.

Illustrator Marion Deuchars has worked with everyone from Wallpaper and Penguin to M&S, Waitrose and Volkswagon. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, she helped found an art and design studio in London and has since applied her award-winning work to advertising, publishing and interior designer. Last year she published Let’s Make Some Great Art - a drawing activity book filled with tasks to teach even the most unartistic to draw. Below are a couple of videos that will give you a little taste of what to expect from her on the night – how to draw a simple bird and play with Mona Lisa’s smile.
Rob and Molly from We All Need Words met in 2007. After combining a varied background of work with the BBC, publishing and advertising they founded We All Need Words and have since helped give a voice to everyone from Walkers, Adidas and Channel Four to The School of Life. They will be giving a talk entitled: Invisible Ink: how to write without sounding like a copywriter. But if you call them ‘copywriters’ they get grumpy. Because just as kids straight out of drama school overact, lots of copywriters overwrite. If something sounds too copywritten, Molly and Rob edit it until it doesn’t. Or they start again. This is a talk about what they’ve learnt, how you can learn it too and why the best (and hardest) writing doesn’t sound ‘written’ at all.
